Mission
Alternative… not so much in the sense of a genre, but more in the way of a definition: great artists and tracks not played on mainstream radio. This was the concept at the genesis of the format.
In the late seventies and early eighties, stations like KROQ in Los Angeles and CFNY in Toronto began playing modern rock tracks that did not have a home on traditional radio. The model evolved into what we know today as Alternative. However, those traditional rock stations are long gone, many flipped to Classic Rock, and Alternative has become a mainstream genre.
So our mission is simple: take up the banner of the founding Alternative stations. We play modern rock that’s overlooked by mainstream alternative, too much for Top 40, and too good for indie. A mix of great artists and tracks not available anywhere else: True Alternative.
Hear the Difference
At True Alternative, we are passionate about audio quality. We stream using the same bit rate that legacy FM and AM stations deliver to their transmitters. In practical terms, that means our audio feed is engineered to match the quality level expected in professional broadcast chains; not the lower, compressed rates commonly used in HD Digital Radio. Because our bit rate is higher, you hear more of the original audio detail, with fewer compression artifacts and a fuller dynamic range. And of course, all the tracks we play are uncompressed, lossless original recordings.
Authentic: True Alternative broadcasts from our studio in Niagara Falls. We are a genuine, fully operational radio station: real radio run by real people. We stream live more than 99% of the time.
